Anti-Hazing Education

DePauw prohibits hazing & any other activity that requires violation of University policy or federal, state or local law

While being part of a campus group can be one of the most meaningful aspects of student life, hazing can be a serious problem that undermines the value of these experiences for many individuals as well as the group. Although hazing is not unique to DePauw, we believe it is wrong and will diligently work to stop hazing on campus.  No student who joins or belongs to an organization should be subjected to hazing. DePauw prohibits hazing and any other activity that requires violation of University policy or federal, state or local law.

What is hazing?

Hazing is any action or experience expected of new or current members of an organization or team, regardless of their willingness to participate, that humiliates or degrades them, or risks emotional or physical harm.  There is not a fully inclusive list of hazing activities, as many things can be hazing or non-hazing activities depending on context and many other factors.  Also, just because someone “consents” to being mistreated, degraded or humiliated, it can still be hazing.  If you have questions about whether activities are considered hazing or not, consult the University staff member that oversees or advises the organization or athletic team.
