Statement on Scholarly or Artistic Work

Colleen Doci began her career in biology at the University of Chicago in the laboratory of 69É«ÇéÊÓƵ alumnus Dr. Mark Lingen. There, she investigated the intersection of gene expression control, cellular signaling, and cancer progression. She continued her training at the National Institutes of Health in the Dental and Craniofacial Institute, where she developed an experimental model of oral cancer metastasis. This model facilitates cell-based exploration of the complex networks contributing to cancer spread. Since then, she has built a teaching-focused laboratory that leverages this model to investigate the microenvironmental cues that regulate cellular motility. These have expanded to examine the motility of cells in other contexts, including muscle hypertrophy during aging. Multiple student-led projects emphasize the interaction of different cell types in the context of larger networks and contribute to our understanding of the cellular landscape of aging, physiology, and cancer.

Educational Background

  • Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, The University of Chicago
  • B.S. in Chemistry, Purdue University

Teaching Interests

Her teaching interests include a wide range of cellular and molecular biology topics, including general biology (BIO 101), cell biology (BIO 241), and cell signaling (BIO 381). She has also taught courses in immunology, biochemistry, and genetics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing their role in cellular physiology.
