The heavy storms that rolled through Greencastle on the final day of Little 5 week might have altered the race schedule and added a few puddles to this year鈥檚 course, but they didn鈥檛 dampen the spirit of one of DePauw鈥檚 most anticipated annual traditions.

Since 1956, teams of riders have taken to the streets around campus 鈥 or, in some cases, to the track at Blackstock Stadium 鈥 to see who among them is the fastest on two wheels. The competition is both friendly and fierce, involving multiple races throughout the weekend and plenty of opportunities for members of the DePauw community to show their support.

After a few slight scheduling adjustments to avoid the worst of the stormy weather for Saturday鈥檚 criterium races, this year鈥檚 overall victory for the entire week of events was claimed by Alpha Chi Omega. But the true impact of Little 5 once again extended far beyond the races themselves and the final standings.

鈥淎s a DePauw alumna, it鈥檚 been truly inspiring to see students take this cherished tradition and grow it into a weeklong celebration of philanthropy, unity and purpose,鈥 says Anna Sherrill, coordinator of civic engagement and the Bonner Scholar Program at DePauw. 鈥淚t continues to leave a meaningful impact both on campus and in the broader community.鈥

At its inception nearly seven decades ago, Little 5 was envisioned to be a strategic outlet to generate support for local charitable organizations. This year, students and community members raised funds on behalf of the United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI), surpassing $16,000 by the end of the week 鈥 all of which will help sustain important literacy initiatives throughout Putnam County and its surrounding areas.

The generosity, however, didn鈥檛 stop there. In the midst of a festive week of activities and racing, students carved out time to build 300 essential resource kits 鈥 packages stocked with toiletries, hygiene products and other vital items 鈥 which will be delivered to local shelters to help them meet immediate needs and provide support for those facing challenging times. They also took the annual Supermarket Sweep initiative by storm, raising nearly $11,000 for the Putnam County Pantry Coalition, easily exceeding the original goal of $9,000.

鈥淟ittle 5 is so much more than a bike race,鈥 says Sherrill. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a reflection of the DePauw spirit 鈥 bringing together students, alumni, faculty and staff into a shared celebration of camaraderie and service. While the friendly competition remains at its core, the real heart of Little 5 lies in the connections it builds and the generosity it inspires.鈥

The event鈥檚 rich tradition of service to the community is a key part of what motivated Cole Melton 鈥26 to step up and join the event鈥檚 steering committee. 鈥淚 actually chose to be involved with Little 5 because of the philanthropy. The Little 5 race occurs on Greencastle streets, so the event is inherently tied to the greater community. The philanthropy events give us the opportunity to meet leaders in the community and to meet the needs of any neighbors who might be struggling.鈥

With the addition of this year’s fundraising totals, DePauw students have now helped raise over $66,000 for the UWCI Little 5 campaign and over $32,000 for local food pantries in the past four years alone. These numbers don’t happen by accident. They’re the direct result of students who understand the tradition and impact of this time-honored event.

“I think Little 5 really represents the core values that we at DePauw have,” says Alyse Millikan, campus activities coordinator. “The students are the ones who plan and put on the events and they’re the ones driving the philanthropic efforts as well. The fun of the races, the importance of the work they’re doing – it all comes together in this magical way, and I am continually impressed by how our students raise the bar for themselves and each other.”
